With more interactions with clients comes more clarity on where Drivvize could serve them better!
Here are a few thoughts from our recent interactions with potential clients, customers and fellow safety practitioners:
The awareness on safety has definitely increased in the automotive industry. That being said, the understanding of fundamental principles of safety remains shaky. Somehow, the jargons (Which are the easiest to pick up) are flowing but the in-depth understanding of what those jargons mean are missing. What this implies is that there is either over-engineering or incorrect engineering practices in the industry in the name of safety engineering.
Writing of safety manuals should have a separate standard of its own describing how they should be written!! (If nobody has talked about this before, you read about this idea first here in our blog 😉) On a serious note, each of the safety manuals from microcontroller/microprocessor vendors we have read in the last 3 months have been so different that it is virtually impossible to read, understand and implement those requirements quickly. We have read safety manuals of Texas Instruments (TI), Infineon, Renesas & NxP in this period and the contents in them vary from ‘Good’ to ‘Not so Good’! When this happens, the purpose of those documents (Which is to understand the Assumptions of Use (AoUs) & figure out what needs to be implemented) are lost and we end up spending a lot of time working/speaking with those vendors and/or breaking our heads figuring out what should be implemented by the integrators. If any of the micro vendors listed above are reading this, please get in touch with us. We could be happy to pass our observations and suggestions to you and your teams.
A thought experiment we have been running in our heads is about designing an ‘optimal’ safety process that balances cost, time & quality without compromising on the safety aspects of a product. Why are we thinking about this? One of our customers jokingly said, “A vehicle designed for the Indian market cannot follow the processes that are followed by a Porsche or Audi!”. In essence, we are searching for that fine path where we are able to achieve the intent of safety without asking our Indian customers to loot the bank!
